Discover the raw and ever-changing landscape of Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula on a private day tour from Reykjavik. Explore volcanic landscapes, geothermal areas, dramatic coastlines, and places shaped by some of Iceland’s most powerful natural forces.

Unlike a standard group tour, this private experience gives you the freedom to enjoy Reykjanes at your own pace. Your guide can adapt the itinerary to the weather, road conditions, current conditions on the peninsula, and your interests on the day.

Explore the dramatic landscape around Kleifarvatn, the largest lake on the Reykjanes Peninsula, surrounded by rugged volcanic mountains and shaped by powerful geological forces.

At Seltún, walk through a colourful geothermal landscape of steaming vents, bubbling mud pots, and mineral-stained ground. The smell, sound, and constantly shifting activity make this one of the most fascinating places to experience Iceland’s volcanic energy.

Continue into the areas shaped by the recent volcanic activity on Reykjanes, where new lava fields have transformed the landscape. Your guide will explain the eruptions, earthquakes, and geological forces that continue to reshape the peninsula.

Visit Grindavík, a fishing town profoundly affected by the recent earthquakes and volcanic activity. Roads have been split, homes and infrastructure have been damaged, and the surrounding landscape has been transformed. Seeing the area in person offers a powerful insight into Iceland’s living geology and the forces beneath the surface.

The journey can also take you to Gunnuhver, one of Reykjanes’ most impressive geothermal areas, where powerful steam vents and bubbling mud pools reveal the energy beneath the ground. The area is also connected to the colourful Icelandic legend of Gunna — a story your guide can bring to life.

At Reykjanesviti, Iceland’s oldest lighthouse, take in the dramatic coastline and rugged cliffs where the Atlantic Ocean meets the volcanic peninsula.

You can also cross the Bridge Between Continents, a symbolic footbridge spanning a fissure between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

And when you’re ready to slow down after a day of exploring, you can choose to add Sky Lagoon to your private experience. Located just minutes from Reykjavik, the oceanside geothermal spa offers warm water and Atlantic views.

  • The Reykjanes Peninsula, especially around Grindavík, remains geologically active. While no lava is currently flowing, an eruption could resume at any time. If that happens and certain areas close, this tour will adapt into an active volcano experience, stopping at the best possible viewpoint to witness the eruption—if conditions allow.

FAQ

Is Sky Lagoon included?

No. The private tour has a base price, and Sky Lagoon can be added as an optional extra.

Can we skip Sky Lagoon?

Absolutely. You can spend the full day exploring Reykjanes and return directly to Reykjavik.

Is the itinerary flexible?

Yes. This is a private experience, so the itinerary can be adapted according to weather, road conditions, current conditions, opening hours, and your interests.

Will we see the recent lava fields?

We aim to include views of the most interesting and accessible recent lava landscapes, but access can change due to volcanic activity, safety restrictions, and official closures.

What is the weather going to be like?

In Iceland, there is no guarantee of the same kind of weather will be the whole day, even though there is beautiful morning during the pick-up in Reykjavík. Keep in mind that the weather can change very suddenly and you might just experience all four seasons in one day. So be well-prepared and bring plenty of layers.

Is there a stop for food?

In Grindavík we will stop for Lunch.

Is it completely safe to walk to the eruption site?

The Civil Protection Department and emergency management are constantly monitor the area and informs of any updates. Sudden changes can therefore occur e.g. due to unfavorable wind direction and gas formation. We obey all such recommendations every time, but in general the area is open for puplic.

Is admission to the Sky Lagoon included?

When booking the tour, you can add on and pay for the Sky Lagoon. If you do not add this on when booking we presume you do not want to go there, and want to be dropped off in Reykjavik instead.
