Chase the Northern Lights

Experience one of Iceland’s most magical natural phenomena on a private Northern Lights adventure from Reykjavik.

When darkness settles over Iceland, the sky can come alive with ribbons of green, pink, purple and white light. But seeing the Aurora Borealis is never as simple as arriving at one particular location.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and the best place to look for them changes from night to night.

That’s where our experience begins.

Your private guide will monitor the weather, cloud cover, aurora forecasts and conditions throughout the evening, helping us decide where to go in search of the clearest skies and the best possible opportunity to see the lights.

Rather than following a fixed route, we chase the conditions.

Sometimes that means travelling away from Reykjavik and its light pollution. Sometimes the best conditions may be much closer to the city. And sometimes we may need to change direction during the evening as clouds move across the landscape.

Along the way, your guide will share stories about the Northern Lights, Icelandic folklore and the science behind this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

When the conditions are right, we’ll stop away from the city lights and give you time to simply look up and enjoy the show.

Your guide can also help you capture the experience with your camera or phone, offering tips for photographing the Aurora and making the most of your evening under the Icelandic sky.

Because this is a private experience, the evening can be adapted to your group. There is no large group to wait for and no fixed sightseeing itinerary to follow. If conditions change, we can change with them.

And if the Aurora appears, there is no need to rush.

Take your time. Step outside. Look up.

The Northern Lights are never guaranteed — but when they appear, they can be unforgettable.

FAQ

Are crampons / spikes necessary?

If the conditions are such that it is slippery, it might be a good idea to bring them along. Please do not wear them inside the car.

What should I wear?

Iceland is known for colourful weather. It can sometimes show you all 4 seasons in one day.

Dressing for this sort of weather can be a challenge so we always recommend dressing in layers. 3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light t-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

Jeans are not recommended for our trips as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet. Lightweight hiking pants, track pants or long cotton pants are best and then wind/waterproof pants over.

Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended although good sneakers are good enough for this rather comfortable and short hike.

Do I need some insurance before going on this trip?

Travel insurance is always a good idea. We recommend that you have personal health insurance coverage when participating in any adventure activities in Iceland, as you would when travelling anywhere in the world.
