The Amazing Northern Lights

Even local Icelanders stand in awe and gaze at the Northern Lights when they appear in the winter sky in Iceland. This natural phenomenon is one of the most spectacular things to see.

On the dark winter nights the lights are often seen dancing across the Icelandic sky. Sometimes the lights are visible in Reykjavik, but most often it is best to drive out away from the city to areas where there is little light pollution. Our professional guides know how to read the weather and can find the best hidden areas to see the lights.
Because we use a Super Jeep, we can go places the other big bus tours cannot, and the journey in one of our jeeps can be an experience in itself.

The tour is of course completely dependent on weather both on earth and on the sun, and sightings are not guaranteed.

FAQ

Are crampons / spikes necessary?

If the conditions are such that it is slippery, it might be a good idea to bring them along. Please do not wear them inside the car.

What should I wear?

Iceland is known for colourful weather. It can sometimes show you all 4 seasons in one day.

Dressing for this sort of weather can be a challenge so we always recommend dressing in layers. 3 or 4 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light t-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

Jeans are not recommended for our trips as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet. Lightweight hiking pants, track pants or long cotton pants are best and then wind/waterproof pants over.

Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended although good sneakers are good enough for this rather comfortable and short hike.

Do I need some insurance before going on this trip?

Travel insurance is always a good idea. We recommend that you have personal health insurance coverage when participating in any adventure activities in Iceland, as you would when travelling anywhere in the world.
