Local folklore spins stories of a concealed chest of gold hidden behind the falls, a treasure that demands the strength and courage of a Viking to seek.
Reynisfjara, a breathtaking black sand beach along the South Coast, showcases the unbridled might of the Atlantic Ocean. Colossal waves crash upon the shore, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable, and you can experience all four seasons in a single day. Be prepared for sudden changes, dress in layers, and carry waterproof gear as rain and wind are common. Check regional forecasts and make sure you bring the right clothes for an enjoyable visit.
Iceland’s renowned for its ever-changing weather, and even during our brief hike, you might encounter all four seasons.
Navigating this capricious climate can be a tad tricky, so layering is key. We suggest three upper layers: start with a light, preferably woolen, T-shirt against your skin, then add a fleece or hefty woolen piece, topped by a waterproof windbreaker.
For the lower half, opt for lightweight hiking pants, track pants, or long cotton trousers, and cover them with windproof and waterproof pants. Avoid jeans, as they become uncomfortably heavy and cold when wet.
When it comes to footwear, sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended, although a good pair of sneakers will suffice for this relatively comfortable and short hike.
There is plenty of food stops on this trip. About 1.5 hour from Reykjavík, we’ll make a quick pit stop at Hvolsvöllur. It’s a chance to grab some on-the-go food. At the mesmerizing Seljalandsfoss waterfall, you can enjoy coffee and pastries and in Vík you’ll have time for a leisurely lunch.
Travel insurance is highly recommended for your Iceland trip. It provides coverage for medical emergencies, trip interruptions, lost baggage, and adventure activities. It’s a wise safety net for peace of mind during your journey.
