Tour to the best known glacial lagoon in Iceland

Jökulsárlón and black diamond beach are without a doubt two of the most interesting places in Iceland. Jökulsárlón is one of the best known glacial lagoons in Iceland. The name means glacier-river-lagoon and is located in the southeast of Iceland in Vatnajökull National Park. The area is unique with blue and white icebergs in the lagoon, and the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, in the background.  We also make stops along the way, depending on daylight in winter time.

As a day trip it’s a quite a long drive for a day but definitely well worth it.

Itinerary

ReynisfjaraThe Black Sand Beach

Reynisfjara, or as it is called in english The Black Sand Beach, is one of the most famous beaches in Iceland. The magnificent nature, black sand, basalt columns, Reynisdrangar sea stacks and strong waves of the Atlantic Ocean make this stop a great experience.

VíkThe small village on the south coast

Vík is the southernmost village on the south coast of Iceland, located on the ring road.

Famous for its beautiful landscapes, black sand beaches and strange rock formations, Vík is a great place to visit.

JökulsárlónThe Glacier Lagoon

The gem of the trip. The most famous glacial lagoon in Iceland, full of icebergs that have broken from the glacier tail of Breiðamerkurjökull, on their way out to sea. Seals can often be seen swimming around in the lagoon or relaxing on top of a floating iceberg.

BreiðamerkurfjaraBlack Dimond Beach

Jökulsárlón is full of icebergs that melt slowly and travel down the river to the ocean. The strong current of the Atlantic Ocean throws the icbergs back to land where they are stranded on the black beach. This beach has earned the nickname Black Dimond Beach. It is a great experience to walk on the beach between the icebergs and enjoy. The sculpture of the ice is varied and you can find endless photo opportunities.

SeljalandsfossGo behind the waterfall

Seljalandsfoss is one of the most visited waterfalls in Iceland. This 66m (213ft) high waterfall is not the most powerful waterfall in Iceland but extremely beautiful. What makes it special, though, is the fact that you can walk behind it.

Just remember to bring rain gear with you because it is not unlikely that spray from the waterfall will catch you.

PotentialDepending on lighting conditions

It is a long drive to Jökulárslón, and in winter there are not long bright days, but if light conditions allow, the guide will make stops in other places.

FAQ

What is the weather going to be like?

In Iceland, there is no guarantee of the same kind of weather will be the whole day, even though there is beautiful morning during the pick-up in Reykjavík. Keep in mind that the weather can change very suddenly and you might just experience all four seasons in one day. So be well-prepared and bring plenty of layers.

What should I wear?

Iceland is known for colourful weather and even in our short hike we could experience all 4 seasons.

It is a bit of a challenge to dress up for this sort of weather. We always recommend dressing in layers. 3 upper layers are highly recommended such as a light t-shirt (preferably wool) next to the skin, then a fleece or heavy wool garment, topped off with a waterproof windbreaker.

Lightweight hiking pants, track pants or long cotton pants are best and then wind/waterproof pants over. Jeans are not recommended for hiking as they become very heavy, cold and uncomfortable to wear when they get wet.

Sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended although good sneakers are good enough for this rather comfortable and short hike.

Do I need some insurance before going on this trip?

Travel insurance is always a good idea. We recommend that you have personal health insurance coverage when participating in any adventure activities in Iceland, as you would when travelling anywhere in the world.
