AURORA FIRST. EVERYTHING ELSE IS A BONUS.

What if your trip to Iceland was built around one goal: finding the Northern Lights?

Forget following a fixed route and simply hoping the skies clear after a long day of sightseeing. This is a different kind of Iceland adventure — one where we follow the weather, search for clear skies and let the Northern Lights help shape our journey.

Our Aurora Road Trip is designed for travellers who truly want to experience the Aurora Borealis. With an experienced guide monitoring weather forecasts, cloud cover and aurora activity, we adapt our route to seek out the best possible conditions.

Sometimes that means driving a long distance. Sometimes it means staying in the same region for another night because the forecast looks promising. Every trip is different, and that is exactly the point.

The Northern Lights are our priority. Everything else is part of the adventure.

A Different Way to Explore Iceland

Most multi-day tours follow a set itinerary, travelling from one destination to the next each day. The Northern Lights are often left to chance at the end of a busy day.

Our approach is different. We plan around the conditions and make decisions based on where we have the best opportunity to see the Aurora.

Your journey may take you along Iceland’s famous South Coast, past glaciers and waterfalls, to black sand beaches or through dramatic volcanic landscapes. Depending on the weather, we may explore the Golden Circle or venture towards other parts of Iceland.

We will make the most of the places we discover along the way, but we cannot promise specific destinations. If the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights is somewhere else, that is where we will aim to go.

This is not about ticking off a list of attractions. It is about following the opportunity, exploring Iceland and being in the right place when the sky comes alive.

Five Nights, One Unforgettable Mission

Your adventure begins in Reykjavík, where you will stay at a pre-arranged hotel on your first night. If the weather and cloud cover offer a promising opportunity, we will head out for an introductory Northern Lights hunt that evening.

The following day, we leave Reykjavík and begin our road trip across Iceland. We spend three nights travelling and exploring outside the capital, adapting our route as conditions change.

Accommodation during the road trip is arranged with flexibility in mind. We aim to book as late as practical so we can stay close to the areas offering the best opportunities for Aurora hunting.

On the final day, we return to Reykjavík and spend the last night at the same hotel used at the beginning of the trip. The tour ends there, leaving you free to arrange your onward travel or extend your stay in Iceland.

Ready for the Unexpected?

A genuine Aurora road trip requires flexibility. You should be prepared for long drives, late nights and changes to the plan. If the Northern Lights appear late, we may leave the hotel later the following morning when the schedule allows.

There may also be times when the best decision is to remain in one area rather than drive somewhere new. We do not travel long distances simply for the sake of covering ground.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and sightings can never be guaranteed. What we can offer is a trip designed around the search itself, with an experienced guide making informed decisions and adapting the journey to the conditions.

If you are willing to embrace the unexpected, this is an exciting way to experience Iceland.

Take Home More Than Memories

Seeing the Northern Lights is an incredible experience — and having a photo of yourself beneath the dancing Aurora makes it even more special.

Whenever we head out for an Aurora hunt, your guide will take photos of you beneath the Northern Lights when conditions allow. The photos will be shared with you after the trip, giving you lasting memories of your Iceland adventure to take home and enjoy.

Chase the lights. Discover Iceland. Let nature decide the route.

Itinerary

Day 1Welcome to Reykjavík & Northern Lights Hunt

Arrive in Reykjavík and check in at our pre-arranged hotel. In the evening, we will assess the weather, cloud cover and aurora forecast. If conditions offer a promising opportunity, we head out of the city to search for the Northern Lights. If the forecast is unfavourable, we may stay in Reykjavík and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Overnight: Reykjavík.

Day 2The Aurora Road Trip Begins

After breakfast, we leave Reykjavík and begin our journey into the Icelandic countryside. Our destination depends on the latest weather forecasts and where we believe we have the best opportunity to find clear skies. Along the way, we make the most of the landscapes and attractions that fit our route and schedule.

In the evening, the focus returns to the Northern Lights.

Overnight: Outside Reykjavík, in accommodation selected according to the route.

Day 3Follow the Clear Skies

Today, we continue following the conditions. We may travel to a new region or spend more time in an area where the forecast looks promising. Depending on our route, we may explore waterfalls, glaciers, coastlines, volcanic landscapes or quieter places away from the main tourist routes.

There is no fixed sightseeing schedule. We adapt the day to the weather, driving distances and opportunities for the evening’s Aurora hunt.

Overnight: Outside Reykjavík.

Day 4Another Day of Possibilities

Every day brings a new forecast and new decisions. We continue our journey based on where we have the best chance of finding suitable conditions for the Northern Lights.

If the weather favours the area where we are staying, we may explore it more deeply instead of driving elsewhere. If another region offers better opportunities and the journey is practical, we may head in that direction.

Whatever the route, the Northern Lights remain our main goal.

Overnight: Outside Reykjavík.

Day 5The Journey Back to Reykjavík

We begin making our way back towards Reykjavík, making the most of the landscapes and attractions along the route when time and conditions allow.

Our return journey needs to fit the overall schedule, so the final day’s route may be more limited than the preceding days. We will still monitor the conditions and make sensible decisions about opportunities for Aurora viewing along the way.

In the evening, we return to the hotel in Reykjavík where the journey began.

Overnight: Reykjavík.

Day 6Departure at Your Own Pace

After breakfast, the tour comes to an end. You are free to arrange your own transfer to Keflavík Airport, continue exploring Reykjavík or extend your stay in Iceland with other activities.

No further tour activities or transfers are included on this day.

Important Information

The Northern Lights are not guaranteed

The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon that depends on solar activity, darkness and weather conditions. We monitor forecasts and adapt our plans to give you the best possible chance, but sightings cannot be guaranteed.

The Northern Lights come first

This trip is designed around Aurora hunting. Sightseeing is an important bonus, but visiting specific attractions or regions is not guaranteed.

Expect a flexible itinerary

The route and daily plans depend on weather, cloud cover, road conditions and driving distances. We may travel long distances or remain in the same region for more than one night if that offers the best opportunity.

Accommodation during the road trip

Your first and last nights are at the same pre-arranged hotel in Reykjavík. The three nights between them are spent outside the capital. Accommodation during the road trip is arranged as late as practical to allow flexibility when choosing the route. The exact locations may not be confirmed far in advance.

Late nights and changing departure times

Aurora hunting can involve staying out late. When possible, we may adjust the following morning’s departure to allow time for rest. The overall itinerary and return to Reykjavík must still be maintained.

Be prepared for long drives

Depending on the conditions, some days may involve substantial driving. Travellers should be comfortable with changing plans and spending time on the road.

Arrival and departure arrangements

You are responsible for making your own way to the Reykjavík hotel on Day 1 and arranging onward travel after the tour ends. The final night at the Reykjavík hotel is included, but airport transfers and any additional accommodation are not included unless specifically stated in your booking.

Weather and road safety

The guide may change the route or activities due to weather, road conditions or safety considerations. Safety always comes first.

FAQ

Will we definitely see the Northern Lights?

No. The Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. Our itinerary is designed to give us flexibility to follow the weather and seek the best available conditions, but nature ultimately decides whether the Aurora appears.

Where in Iceland will we go?

There is no fixed route. We decide where to travel based on weather forecasts, cloud cover, road conditions and the opportunities available. The journey may include the South Coast or other regions of Iceland, but no particular destination is guaranteed.

Why is the accommodation booked at short notice?

Flexibility helps us choose where to stay based on the latest forecasts. We aim to arrange accommodation as late as practical so that we can adapt our route and stay near the areas offering the best opportunities.

Will we be driving long distances?

Possibly. Sometimes we may need to travel a considerable distance to find clearer skies. On other days, the best option may be to stay in the same region and explore the surrounding area.

Will we visit famous waterfalls and glaciers?

We will aim to include natural highlights that fit our route and the conditions. However, the main priority is the Northern Lights, so we cannot promise visits to specific attractions.

Where does the tour start and finish?

The tour starts and finishes at the same pre-arranged hotel in Reykjavík. You make your own way to the hotel on Day 1 and arrange your own onward travel after the tour ends.

Who is this trip best suited for?

This trip is ideal for travellers whose main goal is to experience the Northern Lights and who are happy to embrace an adventurous, flexible journey. It may not suit travellers who prefer a fixed itinerary, guaranteed sightseeing stops or short daily drives.

Do I need some insurance before going on this trip?

Travel insurance is always a good idea. We recommend that you have personal health insurance coverage when participating in any adventure activities in Iceland, as you would when travelling anywhere in the world.
