What should I wear on a glacier trip?

Dressing appropriately for a glacier trip is crucial to ensure comfort, safety, and protection from the unpredictable Icelandic weather but this is not an easy challenge as the weather can vary greatly from season to season and even from day to day. Here’s a list of what to wear on such a trip:

  1. Base Layers:

    • A lightweight, moisture-wicking base layer such as a long-sleeved t-shirt or thermal shirt should suffice.
  2. Mid Layers:

    • Over your base layer, add an insulating layer such as a fleece jacket or a heavy wool sweater. You may skip the heavy mid-layer if the weather is relatively mild. A light fleece or sweater could be carried in your backpack just in case.
  3. Outer Layer:

    • The outermost layer should be a waterproof and windproof jacket, but you may opt for a lighter and more packable shell jacket rather than a heavy one.
  4. Bottoms:

    • Avoid jeans, as they become heavy and uncomfortable when wet. Instead, opt for lightweight hiking pants, quick-drying track pants, or long synthetic or wool trousers. You can omit the windproof and waterproof pants unless the weather forecast suggests rain.
  5. Footwear:

    • Sturdy hiking boots with good traction should be sufficient for the hike. They don’t necessarily need to be insulated or waterproof unless you expect wet conditions. It is significant that the shoes are high so the clips on the crampons do not hurt you.
  6. Headwear:

    • Wear a hat or beanie to keep your head warm.
  7. Gloves:

    • Lightweight gloves should work for a short hike. Again, consider the weather forecast when choosing gloves.
  8. Eyewear:

    • Wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the intense glare off the glacier’s ice.
  9. Sunscreen:

    • Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin areas. Even on cloudy days, the high UV radiation at glaciers can cause sunburn.
  10. Backpack:

    • Bring a small backpack to carry essentials like extra layers, water, and a camera. Ensure it has a waterproof cover or liner to protect your belongings.
  11. Accessories:

    • Depending on the specific conditions and forecast, you can decide whether to bring additional items like hand warmers, spare clothes, or a rain cover for your backpack.

It’s always a good idea to check the local weather forecast before heading out and adjust your gear accordingly. Additionally, be mindful that conditions can change quickly, so it’s wise to carry some extra layers or gear in your backpack just in case.
